Water-base microcement

a seamless, thin-layer decorative and structural coating mixed with water or a water-based polymer resin. It offers an eco-friendly, low-VOC, and flexible finish for floors, walls, and wet areas like bathrooms when paired with a proper sealer.

Solvent-based microcement

Solvent-based finishes for microcement are high-performance sealers—usually two-component polyurethanes—used to provide exceptional chemical resistance, maximum hardness, and heavy-duty abrasion defense for high-traffic floors, garages, or demanding outdoor spaces.

Offers superior resistance to scuffs, scratching, stubborn stains, and heavy foot traffic compared to standard water-based alternatives.

Aesthetics: Can slightly deepen the color or create a glossier, more saturated "wet look" finish, though satin and matte solvent options exist.

Application Safety: High volatile organic compound (VOC) levels and strong vapors require wearing specialized organic vapor respirator masks and ensuring intensive cross-ventilation during application.

Some traditional formulas may amber slightly under direct, intense UV exposure, though modern aliphatic formulations resist this.

Top layer

The microcement top layer (or finish coat) provides the final decorative texture, color depth, and characteristic cloudy movement. Applied in two thin layers over the pre-sanded base coat, it is smoothed with a flexible steel or plastic trowel, lightly sanded between coats, and sealed to ensure waterproof durability.

First color coat: Apply a very thin layer (0.5 mm) of pigmented finish microcement using short, flat trowel strokes.

Intermediate sanding: Let it dry, then lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220-grit) to knock down ridges and clean away dust.

Second color coat: Apply an even thinner final pass to dial in the shade, texture variations, and water-mark patterns.
✓
Once completely cured, perform a final ultra-fine sand and apply a specialized polyurethane sealer to protect against stains and wear.

Sealer

A microcement sealer is a critical protective topcoat that transforms porous cement surfaces into waterproof, stain-resistant, and durable finishes. It typically uses a two-step system of a primer/pre-sealer followed by multi-coat polyurethane varnish.

Preparation Job

Proper microcement preparation requires eliminating any surface movement, ensuring the substrate is completely flat, dry, and clean, and applying a specialized primer with fiberglass mesh. Because microcement is only 3 to 4 mm thick, any underlying ridges, lips, or movement will show through the final finish.

Check stability: Ensure floors, drywall, or cement boards are firmly screwed or glued down with zero flex.

Clean thoroughly: Remove all dust, grease, loose particles, and old failing coatings.
✓
Fill gaps and level: Fill joints, screw holes, or cracks using repair mortar or a base compound, then sand flat.
